Not Wearing
Sunglasses Can Increase Chances of Developing Eye Problems, June 11, 2007
Saint Petersburg, Florida
- Exposure to ultraviolet rays can increase your chances of developing all types
of severe eye problems according to a local ophthalmologist.
But there is something you can do to prevent it. Eye doctors say it's important
to wear sunglasses. Some say they're like sunscreen for the eyes. They're very
important for young children.
Eye-opening Reality: Blinded by Fireworks, July 2, 2007
Sarasota, Florida - At
first glance 59-year-old David Shue and his wife Susie seem like any other
couple. They've been married for 26 years. But when you look closer it's Susie
who must explain what the dice reveal in their game of Yahtzee.
The dog snoozing at David's feet is his guide dog. David Shue, said “I'll tell
you at first it was hell. I was bitter. I didn't understand why God would let
something like this happen to me."
What happened to Shue is something that will happen to other teenagers all
across the country this Fourth of July.
Back to School Eye Exams are Crucial,
August 24, 2007
St.
Petersburg, Florida - 12-year-old Savannah Vandenbroeke is looking forward to
the school year. We caught up with her having her eyes checked at the Florida
Eye Center at 1515 9th Avenue North in St. Petersburg.
Good eyesight is a must for Vandenbroeke. Her favorite subject in school is
math. She's in the 7th grade and says her hobbies keep her busy: “I like going
swimming and playing basketball."
Thanks to Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), the
world became clearer for 58 year-old Frank Williams of
St. Petersburg, who has suffered with glaucoma since age
16.
Glaucoma, an
eye disease caused by build-up of fluid within the eye,
causes damage to the optic nerve, gradually decreasing
sight without warning. More than five million people in
the United States suffer from glaucoma. According to the
World Health Organization, it is the second leading
cause of blindness around the globe.

Blurred vision could
be an indication of cataracts, glaucoma,
age-related macular degeneration, or medical
problems such as diabetes. The leading cause of
blurred vision in people over 60 is cataracts.
Of all
the senses, most people believe sight is the most
precious. Yet, functional
blindness is a grim reality for 17% of all nursing
home residents. Another 19% have lesser forms of
visual impairment. Many of these cases could have
been helped with regular professional eye care.
